Guess What?... Chicken Butt!

When we were talking about our farm, we wanted chickens first, then pigs, then goats. However, God had other plans and pigs cut in line and came to us in August. The idea of chickens took a backseat for a while because of other projects, but we continued to pray for future chickens and have been slowly preparing a barn stall for chickens with nesting boxes, fixing holes here and there, building a better door to the stall and moving the compost pile to make room for an animal/chicken run.
Fast forward to last Sunday, we were talking to our good friend Sandy and she really wanted to help us get chickens for eggs. Lo and behold, after her generous donation, within a few days, we found 6 egg-laying Golden Comet hens at a local farm!
We went to go pick them up and there were soooo many of the same kind of chickens in that farm. The guy just told us to catch 6 and we had a bit of a Rocky movie moment of "Catch that chicken, Rock!" 🤣. Turns out Patrick had a knack for catching chickens. On the ride home, our daughter Sara called her Grandpa to share her new joke, "Guess what?.... Chicken Butt!" 😂
Once we got them to their new home, they were a bit on edge and kept running away from us. They also didn't go in the nesting boxes.

However, the next day, Caleb found 2 eggs! And another one later that day. It was like Easter morning every morning for the kids ever since.

They've fallen in love with them and loved checking on them, looking for eggs, feeding them, and petting them. I'd have to say they've gotten more popular with the kids than the pigs. Nonetheless, we still love how Conrad is so friendly and sweet after mealtimes.
There are still quite a bit of work to be done for the chickens, like getting heat set up for the winter, and an animal/chicken run outside the barn. But for now, our farm is growing! Just as the Blessed Mother brought the great blue heron to our land, St. Francis has brought a host of animals of his own (a shepherding puppy may be in our near future 😉).
We are still looking to add more varieties of chickens and a pair of goats (but we won't say no to ducks, sheep, cows and bunnies if they are in our not-so-distant-future 🤭). Please pray for the success of our farm and for the guests to come. Also, please consider donating to our farm animal fund.
God bless you, Sandy for bringing us closer to our mission. We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community through the farm.
